top story this morning ... one woman is dead after a head on collision in roanoke county. it happened around nine p-m in the 22-hundred block of hardy road. police say 19- year-old nicole simmons was killed after her vehicle crossed the center line and hit another vehicle head on. the other driver, 33-year old cristopher hash was taken to the hospital to be treated. authorities believe drugs and alcohol could have been a factor in the crash. a lynchburg man remains behind bars after being connected to a joint child exploitation investigation. 32-year-old robert trent was arrested on a total of 25 counts related to child pornography and having indecent liberties with a child 13-years of age or under. trent is being held without bond at the lynchburg adult detention center. rocky mount police arrest the man they say robbed the family pharmacy tuesday evening. police say 26- year-old joshua

franklin county jail friday evening. on tuesday -- police say cundiff came into the family pharmacy.. pulled out a gun.. and demanded drugs. the danville community comes together for the second week in a row aiming to stop violent crime. these walks and vigils were all sparked by a shooting earlier this month in which a danville doctor was shot while walking home from the hospital. his neighbor was also shot when he came out to see what was going on. those at the event say this is a small but important step. danville regional medical center's c-e-o has also been asking citizens to submit their ideas for how to combat the violence in the city. he says since last weeks' event he has received several responses. hundreds of students take a proactive approach in politics ...by participating in the 26-th washington and lee mock convention. it's a research project students participate in that predicts the candidate who could win the

lake ... some parts were colder than places in antarctica. that's information we learned thanks to a new weather station installed on the mountain's peak. i took on the snow covered hike on thursday to find out more. on one of the coldest mornings of the year. nat? virginia tech meteorology students brave the elements to check on their brand new weather station ... 4400 feet above sea level. :14 - :20 "it's a good location because we can actually see what's going on in the lower parts of the atmosphere when we normally can't tell what's going on up here." brandon pierson. sophomore. and as you may or may not imagine nat wind conditions can be drastically different from the lower elevations of southwest virginia to the higher. stand up -- we're standing at

and while it's cold in the lower elevations today it's much much different 4400 feet up. wind chills of 25 to 30 degrees below zero when you get these big gusts of wind and that's exactly why these virginia tech students picked way up here to take these measurements. british police after helping officers catch a suspect. take a look. the suspect was running away from police when a man standing on the side casually sticks his foot out -- tripping the suspect who was being chased. after falling down, two police officers jumped at their chance to arrest the man. according to authorities, the suspect was a drug dealer. donald trump fans show their support for him in various ways ... several supports have made their appearance at rallies with signs, hats, buttons and shirts. this one man is getting a little more creative than others. he came dressed as the "trump wall." it happened during donald's rally in tampa florida. earlier this week, the presidential candidate autographed a "mini trump" look-a-like's hand in louisiana. a group of scientists detect ripples in space time as predicted by albert einstein 100 years

good morning everybody.. the northside boys basketball team wrapped up their regular season with win over william fleming thursday night... with the post season looming.. the vikings stand 21 and one...on the season... after a 12-0 run through the blue ridge district. alyssa rae...takes a closer look..at the vikings juggernaut.. last year the northside boys basketball team emerged as a state contender in the 3a ranks, making it all the way to the state semifinals. this year, they hope that experience helps bring them back to richmond. bright "us was making it to the state finals for really hope this mature as a team and everybody got a lot better

authorities were called to the scene around ten-thirty friday morning. negotiators spent majority of the day trying to get 35-year old kenneth clark to surrender. in the end it came down to this individual surrendering peacefully, he choice not to" investigators say the suspect took his own life after killing two other men. police say it was an outcome no one wanted. the mother of noah thomas now awaits sentencing this morning. this after a judge found her guilty on all three counts of child abuse and neglect. white was charged following the death of her five year old son last march. investigators found him dead in a septic tank. judge bradley finch says white should have known her children would be in danger when she left them unattended the morning noah went missing. ashley white is schedule to be

set to begin march 9-th. after a year-long investigation, the martinsville police department announced today 14 people charged with dealing drugs are behind bars. chief sean dunn says all 14 of those people were indicted by a grand jury on monday on 51 charges. those include the sale or distribution of cocaine, marijuana, and oxycodone. lead investigator greg johnston says the result of the investigation is for a safer city to live in. lt. greg johnston, special investigations: 04:16:41 "we strongly believe that the arrests from this operation are going to make a major impact on illegal drug activity, not only in the city of martinsville, but also in our surrounding communities." dunn says the investigation was conducted primarily in the community. and dunn says the hope is to make new arrests and indictments

five people are displaced this morning after two apartment units catch fire. it happened in chesapeake friday evening. according to the chesapeake fire department, crews were called to the scene around nine p-m. crews were able to contain the fire a little after nine-thirty. authorities say the cold weather made the situation more challenging. there were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. four people remain missing one week after a powerful earthquake struck taiwan. rescue crews have pulled a total of 113 bodies from the collapsed apartment block. authorities arrested the building's developer and two architects on suspicion of negligent homicide. investigators say they are accused of cutting corners during the construction process of the high-rise. security increases ahead of the pope's visit. thousands of police officers and soldiers have been deployed in

week here in southwest virginia ... here's a look back at some of this week's best moments. an american world war two veteran reunites with his wartime girlfriend after more than 70 years. 93-year-old norwood thomas flew from virginia to australia to meet 88-year-old joyce morris for valentines day. the two first met in london shortly before d-day when thomas was 21 years old... morris was just a teenager. they reconnected on skype last year and a campaign started to raise money for a trip. both thomas and morris agree they wish their paths crossed sooner. roanoke students dress to recognize "homeless awareness day". many wore "help the homeless" t- shirts. they were designed by students and sold to raise money to support the school systems 484 homeless students. they've raised nearly 8- thousand dollars and made changes that are priceless.

the center line and hit another vehicle head on. the other driver, 33-year old cristopher hash was taken to the hospital to be treated. authorities believe drugs and alcohol could have been a factor in the crash. a lynchburg man remains behind bars after being connected to a joint child exploitation investigation. 32-year-old robert trent was arrested on a total of 25 counts related to child pornography and having indecent liberties with a child 13-years of age or under. trent is being held without bond at the lynchburg adult detention center. rocky mount police arrest the man they say robbed the family pharmacy tuesday evening. police say 26- year-old joshua cundiff turned himself in at the franklin county jail friday evening. on tuesday -- police say cundiff came into the family pharmacy.. pulled out a gun.. and demanded drugs. the danville community comes together for the second week in a row aiming to stop violent crime.

white house. out of the 25 conventions --- the students have been right 19 times. it's a big responsibility to continue the record of accuracy, at the same time it's so exciting to be a part of the univerisity tradition," guest speakers include political analyst ann coulter. delegates will decide later today who they think could win white house. former virginia governor jim gilmore suspends his presidential campaign. gilmore joined the race last july along with 16 other candidates. during his campaign, gilmore failed to win any support --- only qualifying for two undercard debates. he won 12 votes in iowa and finished 12-th in new hampshire. gilmore says he will support his party's nominee and continue to express his concerns about anyone supporting president obama's policies. six candidates now remain in the race for the republican party. in what's news today... roanoke hosts a "firehouse primary" today. this primary will decide which candidates will run for mayor.

that's information we learned thanks to a new weather station installed on the mountain's peak. i took on the snow covered hike on thursday to find out more. on one of the coldest mornings of the year. nat? virginia tech meteorology students brave the elements to check on their brand new weather station ... 4400 feet above sea level. :14 - :20 "it's a good location because we can actually see what's going on in the lower parts of the atmosphere when we normally can't tell what's going on up here." brandon pierson. sophomore. and as you may or may not imagine nat wind conditions can be drastically different from the lower elevations of southwest virginia to the higher. stand up -- we're standing at about 4400 feet above sea level and while it's cold in the lower elevations today it's much much different 4400 feet up. wind chills of 25 to 30 degrees below zero when you get these big gusts of wind and that's exactly why

martinsville police department announced today 14 people charged with dealing drugs are behind bars. chief sean dunn says all 14 of those people were indicted by a grand jury on monday on 51 charges. those include the sale or distribution of cocaine, marijuana, and oxycodone. lead investigator greg johnston says the result of the investigation is for a safer city to live in. lt. greg johnston, special investigations: 04:16:41 "we strongly believe that the arrests from this operation are going to make a major impact on illegal drug activity, not only in the city of martinsville, but also in our surrounding communities." dunn says the investigation was conducted primarily undercover working with people in the community. the investigation is ongoing, and dunn says the hope is to make new arrests and indictments every three months. five people are displaced this morning after two apartment

week here in southwest virginia ... here's a look back at some of this week's best moments. an american world war two veteran reunites with his wartime girlfriend after more than 70 years. 93-year-old norwood thomas flew from virginia to australia to meet 88-year-old joyce morris for valentines day. the two first met in london shortly before d-day when thomas was 21 years old... morris was just a teenager. they reconnected on skype last year and a campaign started to raise money for a trip. both thomas and morris agree they wish their paths crossed sooner. roanoke students dress to recognize "homeless awareness day". many wore "help the homeless" t- shirts. they were designed by students and sold to raise money to support the school systems 484 homeless students. they've raised nearly 8-
